Ofsted records Holyport Pre-school as resigned from the Early Years Register. A High Court petition to wind up the village playgroup was heard on 12 August.
Holyport Pre-school has come off Ofsted’s Early Years Register, and the association that ran it is the subject of a High Court petition to wind it up. Ofsted’s own provider data records the pre-school’s registration status as “Resigned”. A petition to wind up Holyport Pre-School Playgroup was presented on 22 June and heard on 12 August. (Ofsted, childcare provider level data as at 31 March 2026, dataset 3; The Gazette, notice 5180466, 24 July 2026)
The pre-school had been registered with Ofsted since 1 October 1992. Its own website says it had been established in the village “for over 50 years”. (Ofsted, Holyport Pre-school, URN 108450; Holyport Pre-school)
What the registers show
Three public records tell the story, and they do not all say the same thing.
- Ofsted. The provider page for Holyport Pre-school, URN 108450, is marked Closed. Ofsted’s underlying provider data puts the pre-school in the dataset of providers that left the Early Years Register between 1 September 2025 and 31 March 2026, with the status “Resigned”. It was registered on 1 October 1992 as sessional day care on non-domestic premises. The registered person is recorded as Holyport Pre-School Playgroup Committee.
- The Gazette. A petition to wind up Holyport Pre-School Playgroup, of The Dhesna, Childerhouse Hall, Moneyrow Green, Maidenhead SL6 2NA, was presented on 22 June 2026. It was brought by a member of the association, not by a creditor such as HMRC. The hearing was listed for 10.30am on 12 August 2026 at the Rolls Building in London. The court number is CR-2026-004824.
- The Charity Commission. Holyport Pre School Playgroup, charity number 1038142, remains on the register. Its reporting was 49 days overdue when we checked on 18 August. Its last filed figures, for the year to 31 August 2024, show income of £74,951 and spending of £65,958, with three trustees and three volunteers.

What “resigned” means
Ofsted registration is not a badge. It is an offence to provide early years childcare for a child for more than two hours a day without being registered with Ofsted or a childminder agency, unless an exemption applies. (GOV.UK, the Ofsted registers)
“Resigned” is a specific term in Ofsted’s data. Its data dictionary defines it as “provider has resigned its registration”. That is listed separately from “Cancelled”, where Ofsted removes a registration, and from “Cancelled non-payment of fee”. Ofsted publishes the status but does not explain individual cases. (Ofsted provider level data, data dictionary)
The winding-up petition is a separate process. Holyport Pre-School Playgroup was an unincorporated association rather than a company, and a member of an association can petition to have it wound up under the Insolvency Act 1986. A petition of that kind is not by itself proof that a body could not pay its debts. It is often the formal route to closing an association down and dealing with what it still holds. (The Gazette, notice 5180466)
No notice of the outcome of the 12 August hearing had appeared in The Gazette when we searched the record on 18 August. (The Gazette, all notices search for Holyport Pre-School)
The website is still up
Holyport Pre-school’s website was still online on 18 August. It advertises “Spaces available for April 2026”, lists fees of £13.50 for a three-hour session, and gives opening hours for a term-time-only setting for children aged two to five. It carries no closure notice. (Holyport Pre-school)
Ofsted’s register, not a provider’s own website, is the record of whether a setting is registered to take children. Its last inspection was on 10 May 2023. (Ofsted, URN 108450)
What it means for you
If you were expecting a place. Check Ofsted’s register before paying a deposit anywhere. A setting has to appear on it, and the page shows the current status and every inspection. Search Ofsted’s register of childcare providers by name or postcode.
What is left nearby. Ofsted’s provider data as at 31 March 2026 lists no registered childcare at the Moneyrow Green address. A search of Ofsted’s live register on 18 August returned no pre-school in the village. The nearest registered settings in that data are:
- Little Muddy Me, Bray Lake Water Sports, Monkey Island Lane, Bray: sessional day care
- Little Pioneers Nursery and Pre-school, Larchfield Road, Maidenhead: full day care
- Bee Happy Club, Bray Village Hall: registered for out-of-school care, not early years places
(Ofsted provider level data, dataset 1)
Your funded hours are not tied to one setting. The 15 and 30 hour entitlements for two, three and four year olds follow the child, not the provider, so they can move with you to another registered setting. The rules and the eligibility check are on GOV.UK and Childcare Choices.
If you are owed fees. Anyone who thinks they are owed money by the association should keep their paperwork. If a winding-up order is made, the appointed liquidator deals with claims, and any appointment has to be advertised in The Gazette. The Gazette’s notice search is free and will carry it.
