Park in Windsor for £30 a day or Maidenhead for £7, and residents get the first hour free. Every council tariff, plus this week's roadworks by area.
Parking a car for a working day costs £30 at River Street in Windsor and £7 at Vicus Way in Maidenhead, eleven miles apart in the same borough. That gap, and the free first hour most residents never claim, is the practical stuff worth knowing about driving in the Royal Borough. The roadworks list changes weekly and is below too, but the tariffs are what people actually get caught by.
What the council is digging up this week
The Royal Borough publishes its own works separately from the utilities, split by area, and updates it weekly. For the week of 10 to 14 August 2026 the council’s own schedule lists:
- Windsor, Eton and Old Windsor. Eton Wick Road, carriageway works, Wednesday 12 August, with multi-way lights. Osborne Road, carriageway works, Friday 14 August.
- Maidenhead. A heavy week. Carriageway works on Belmont Road, Risborough Road, Cordwallis Road and Bath Road on Monday 10 August, with College Rise closed 9.30am to 3.30pm that day. Then College Avenue, Wentworth Crescent and Queen Street on Tuesday, Harvest Hill Road and St Peters Road on Wednesday, Princess Street, South Road, Ray Meadow and Lakeside on Thursday, and Denmark Street on Friday. Footway works on Boulters Lane on Wednesday, thermal patching on Dorchester Close and Mallow Park, gully works on College Road.
- Ascot and the Sunnings. School Road on Tuesday 11 August, The Poplars on Wednesday, Burleigh Road on Thursday and Friday.
- Datchet, Horton and Wraysbury. Gully jetting on Stanwell Road, Horton, Monday 10 August.
That list is council work only. For utility works, emergency works and everything being dug by a water or gas company, the borough points at one.network, which is the live national roadworks map and the only source that shows what appeared overnight.

Car park charges, Windsor
Charges in Windsor apply Monday to Sunday, 9am to 9pm, including bank holidays. There is no free Sunday here, unlike Maidenhead.

River Street is the expensive one and it is not close. At £7 for the first hour it costs three times Alexandra Gardens for a quick errand, and £30 for over five hours against £19. It sits directly below the castle by the bridge, which is exactly why. If you are visiting the castle and are willing to walk five more minutes, Alexandra Gardens on Alma Road saves £11 on a day out. River Street’s tariff is dated 1 April 2026 on the council’s own page.
Victoria Street is a multi-storey with a 1.8 metre height restriction, which rules out most roof boxes and vans, and 11 CCTV cameras. Note the evening rule: entry is restricted on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 9pm to Windsor on-street permit holders only.
Car park charges, Maidenhead
Maidenhead runs on a different rule: charges apply Monday to Saturday, 9am to 9pm, and Sundays and bank holidays are free.

Vicus Way is the cheapest long stay in the borough at £7 for anything over three hours, and it is a five-minute walk from Maidenhead station. It has 503 spaces over ten levels, a 2.1 metre height limit, fast EV chargers, and is RingGo only, location code 37592. Vehicle entry is limited to 5am to 8pm, though you can walk in and drive out at any hour.
It also runs a deliberate weekend offer: arrive after 4pm on Friday and you can stay until 11am on Monday for £10, aimed at people leaving the car outside the London ULEZ and taking the train in.
Hines Meadow on St Cloud Way is entered from the A4 only, and several levels are reserved for season ticket holders, marked with red lines. Check the pillar signs before you leave the car.
Two Maidenhead car parks people still drive to have gone. Stafferton Way closed to all users on 19 January 2026, with season ticket holders moved to Vicus Way, Braywick Park or Hines Meadow. Nicholsons is no longer a council car park and the council’s page says it is no longer in use.
The discounts most people miss
Residents get the first hour free. If you register for the RingGo residents’ discount scheme, the first hour is free at Alexandra Gardens (RingGo code 62401), Victoria Street (62405) and Hines Meadow (62404), among others. It has to be set up before you park, at RingGo.co.uk, and you pay through the resident line on 01753 360 000 rather than the general one.
Zone E permit holders can park free in Windsor Dials on Saturdays and Sundays, 9am to 6pm, and free in all council car parks except River Street, every day between 6pm and 9am.
Blue badge holders park free in any bay in council car parks, not only the marked disabled bays, as long as the badge is displayed. Alexandra Gardens has 8 designated bays, Victoria Street 4, River Street 6 and Hines Meadow 34.
Motorcycle bays are free in the council car parks that have them.
Driving in and out
For Windsor town centre, the council’s own directions are M4 junction 6 for Slough, then follow the signs, or M3 junction 3 if you are coming from the south and west. Both funnel onto the A332 and then into a town centre that has the castle wall on one side of Thames Street and the river on the other, which is the constraint nothing fixes.
The nearest car parks to the castle and the Guildhall are Victoria Street SL4 1EG, King Edward Court SL4 1TG, River Street SL4 1QT and Romney Lock Road SL4 6HX. Blue badge parking is six spaces at the top of Thames Street.
On a busy Saturday, or any day Royal Windsor Racecourse or Legoland is running, the train is usually quicker than the queue on the A308. Windsor train times to London has the times and fares, and both Windsor stations are in the town centre rather than on the edge of it.
