Maidenhead Shopmobility reopened on 21 October at 53 High Street, hiring scooters Monday to Saturday from 9.30am. Hours, prices and how to book a scooter.

Maidenhead Shopmobility reopened on 21 October in its own shop at 53 High Street, hiring out mobility scooters Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 4.30pm. The service, run by the local charity People to Places, has been working without a permanent base since it left the Nicholson Centre.

People to Places confirmed the date and address to Windsor Today and sent a photograph of the new signs, which have just been installed. The shop is for anyone who has difficulty walking because of age, disability, illness or injury, and lets them hire a scooter or wheelchair to go shopping, get to appointments, see friends or reach other places around the town centre.

“A new home for Shopmobility”

A spokesperson for People to Places said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have a new home for Shopmobility. Since leaving the Nicholson Centre, our team has worked incredibly hard to keep the service running. Having our own dedicated base again means we can provide a more convenient and welcoming service for our members, while also giving us the opportunity to grow.”

The charity said the move carried extra weight for the team. “This move is particularly poignant as it comes following the passing of our much-missed colleague, Peter Haley, who was a passionate champion of the service. Peter would have been delighted to see Shopmobility secure a new home on the high street.”

It thanked the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead for helping. “Their assistance has enabled us to continue providing an essential service that helps local people maintain their independence and stay connected to their community. We look forward to welcoming both existing and new users and continuing to help people maintain their independence for many years to come.”

The Nicholson Centre itself is due to come down: the council signed the demolition licence for Nicholsons in September.

Opening hours and how to book

  • Where: 53 High Street, Maidenhead.
  • When: Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 4.30pm. The last hire is at 3pm.
  • Booking: the Maidenhead service must be booked in advance on 07514 771536, according to the charity’s Shopmobility page.
  • Collection by car: park in Park Street behind Maidenhead Town Hall, in the disabled bays or on the double yellow lines where that is permitted, then ring 07514 771536. A member of staff will bring the scooter to your car.

The charity’s page adds that staff can deliver a scooter anywhere in the town centre if you call when you are ready. First-time users should allow at least 15 minutes to register and have a short induction, and should bring photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport, and proof of address. Card payment is preferred.

What it costs

People to Places told us there are too many options to list and pointed readers to its website for prices. When we checked the page on 5 November 2026, it gave these rates:

Price
Manual wheelchair, non-members from £15 a day
Mobility scooter, non-members from £35 a day
Members’ scooter hire £3 a week, unlimited use
Membership, one service (Royal Borough residents) £25 a year
Membership, one service, Income Support £10 a year
Shopmobility-only membership, non-residents £40 a year

Members pay the £3 weekly fee only on the first day they use a scooter in a week, and nothing in weeks they do not use it; a week runs Monday to Saturday. The page says membership also includes free parking while using the service. You do not need to live in the borough to use Shopmobility. Extended hire for holidays and trips elsewhere in the UK is also offered from both the Maidenhead and Windsor bases.

Windsor’s Shopmobility, beside Alexandra Gardens, is unchanged and takes bookings on 01753 622330.

Volunteers wanted

People to Places is looking for volunteer shop assistants for the Maidenhead shop. Anyone interested can email info@people2places.org.uk.
