Maidenhead's town centre Post Office reopens at 1pm on Thursday 29 October inside the Southern Co-op at 50 Queen Street, five months after it closed with TG Jones.
Maidenhead town centre will have a Post Office again from 1pm on Thursday 29 October. The counter will be inside the Welcome Southern Co-op at 50 Queen Street.
The town’s main branch has been shut since Saturday 16 May. It closed when the retailer that ran it, TG Jones, resigned from its Post Office contract. The counter was in the TG Jones shop at 16-22 Nicholsons Walk.
The Post Office announced the reopening on 15 October in an information letter on its consultation hub. It calls the Queen Street counter “an interim service whilst we continue to seek a permanent solution”. A new temporary postmaster will run it.
Opening hours
The letter gives these hours for the new counter:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 9am to 5.30pm |
| Saturday | 9am to 12.30pm |
| Sunday | Closed |
The Post Office says the counter will be a low-screened, open-plan serving point that is part of the shop’s own counter. There is level access at the entrance. Inside there will be a low-level writing desk and space for a wheelchair.
The new site is about 0.3 miles from the old one, “along mostly level terrain”, the letter says. There is time-limited roadside parking nearby.
What you can and cannot do there
The letter’s table of services for the new branch lists:
- cash withdrawals, cash deposits and cheque deposits
- Drop & Go
- bill payments and top-ups
- foreign currency, euros only
- travel money cards
Passport Check & Send is not on that list. The old Maidenhead branch offered it. When the Post Office wrote to customers in May, the branches it named nearby were:
- Cox Green, in the Co-op on Cox Green Lane, about 1.9 miles away: similar services, but no Passport Check & Send
- Highway, at Jay Food & Wine, 8 Highway Avenue, about 2.4 miles away: no Passport Check & Send, and only euros and dollars for travel money
- Burnham, 74 High Street, about 4.8 miles away: the same services as the old Maidenhead branch, including Passport Check & Send
Burnham is in Buckinghamshire, outside the Royal Borough. The Post Office’s helpline for what a branch sells is 03457 223344.
You can comment, but not on the decision
The Post Office says reopening in a new location “is a commercial decision for Post Office Ltd and we are not seeking feedback on this aspect of the change”. It does want comments on access into and inside the shop.
The letter says comments are open until Wednesday 11 November. The consultation hub page gives 12 November. You can respond:
- online at postofficeviews.co.uk, branch code 173946
- by email to comments@postoffice.co.uk
- by phone on 03452 66 01 15
- by post to FREEPOST Your Comments
The Post Office says it will publish a summary of the comments and its response once its plans are final.
The longer gap
When the branch closed, the Post Office said it was “working hard to keep any period of closure to a minimum”. It reopens 166 days later, as a stopgap rather than a permanent branch.
The Post Office also had to correct its own advice. Its first letter, in December 2025, named only Cox Green and Highway as alternatives, and neither handles passport applications. A second letter on 29 May apologised “that we did not previously mention Burnham Post Office”.
Maidenhead already has smaller Drop & Collect counters for parcels, including at Ray Mill Road East.
What it means for you
- From Thursday 29 October: take cash, cheques, bills and parcels to 50 Queen Street. The counter opens at 1pm that day.
- On Saturdays: it closes at 12.30pm.
- Applying for a passport: check before you go. The new counter’s service list does not include Passport Check & Send. Burnham is the nearest branch the Post Office has named that does.
- Want euros? Queen Street lists euros. For other currencies, look further afield.
- Have a view on access: send it by 11 November.
